ADMINISTRATIVE OBSTACLES SLOW MEDICINAL CANNABIS UPTAKE IN NSW

In the period 1 August 2016 to 31 December 2017, NSW Health received 84 applications for authority to prescribe and supply cannabis-based products for the treatment of individual patients with 61 being approved.

Shadow Health Minister Walt Secord attributed the low numbers to the state government’s obstacles including applications which take significant time to complete and submit resulting in many people being discouraged to apply.

NSW Labor leader in the Upper House Adam Searle introduced the legislation – the Medicinal Cannabis (Compassionate Access) Bill 2018 – into the NSW Parliament to legalise medicinal cannabis for the terminally ill and people with serious illness.
